A 1906 Souvenir Scrapbook sold at the 2023 Hershey RM Auction
A souvenir scrapbook was recently sold with many previously unpublished Vanderbilt Cup Race images.
Greg O.
This 1906 souvenir scrapbook went across the RM Sotheby's auction block in October in Hershey and sold for price of $2,300.
It was bid upon, but the VanderbiltCupRaces.com archives will not be in possession of this very rare scrapbook. However, the unknown winner of the auction will receive many Vanderbilt Cup race photos of which many have not been seen in decades.
Here are the race entrant photos found within the pages of the scrapbook. Each photo was taken at the Hairpin Turn in Old Westbury.
Vincenzo Lancia in the Italian #4 FIAT
Louis Wagner for France in the #10 Darracq
Camille Jenatzy in Germany's #3 Mercedes
France's #18 De Dietrich piloted by Arthur Duray
For the U.S., Joe Tracy in the #9 Locomobile
Elliot Shepard in the unique round radiator #6 Hotchkiss from France
Another U.S. entry, the #1 Thomas raced by Hubert Le Blon
The German #7 Mercedes driven by William Luttgen
The #2 Panhard from France with George Heath at the wheel

Thank you, Howard, for this look at a great book-find at Hershey! Looks like that’s starter Fred Wagner putting himself “on the line” waving in Louis Wagner as #10 raced over the finish line, in 1906. See Fred’s story at “Residence of the Starter of Five Vanderbilt Cup Races—Fred Wagner—Rediscovered in Smithtown” on VCR at https://www.vanderbiltcupraces.com/blog/article/the_residence_of_the_starter_of_five_vanderbilt_cup_races_rediscovered_in_s
